Spotify Discredits Rumours Suggesting Premium Ads is in the Works

Spotify has publically denounced the recent rumours suggesting the company will begin integrating ads into its ‘Premium’ paid tier subscription.

This week, Spotify posted a message on X (formerly Twitter). “There is a rumor circulating that Spotify is putting ads into premium music listening,” the company says. “This rumor is false. Premium music listening is and will remain ad-free.”

The message was in response to a growing narrative that the company may be folding in ads to its Premium tier. Over the past few weeks, more and more users were experiencing what’s now believed to be a bug in which ads were incorporated into the listening experience, despite having an active subscription to the Premium service. However, despite this bug, it appears that Spotify is committed to keeping its Premium tier ad-free for the time being.

It’s becoming far too common that streaming subscriptions are introducing ad-supported tiers to its user base. Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video have all launched subscription tiers that provide lower monthly costs in exchange for having ads baked in.

It’s been largely reported that Spotify may be launching a ‘Music Pro’ tier later this year. In an earlier report from Bloombergit’s believed that the new tier may offer hi-fi lossless audio. At the time, it was reported that Music Pro could be a $6 USD (around $8.50 CAD) add-on to the current Premium tier. It’s also believed that the service will offer some remixing tools and deals on upcoming concert tickets.

While Premium is to remain ad-free for the time being, it’s not a guarantee that ads won’t one day be folded into the tier, perhaps once Music Pro launches. However, for the time being, subscribers can rest assured that their monthly sub will continue to grant ad-free benefits for the music streaming service.
