Apple Ships 600 Tons of iPhones from India to Avoid U.S. Tariff Hikes

According to a Reuters report, Apple has expedited the shipment of 600 tons of iPhones, equating to around 1.5 million units, from its manufacturing facilities in India to the U.S. to circumvent the newly imposed tariffs.

The Trump administration’s recent escalation of tariffs has significantly affected companies with manufacturing operations in China, including Apple. The imposed 125% tariff on Chinese imports poses a substantial challenge for Apple, which has traditionally relied heavily on Chinese production lines.

To bolster its Indian manufacturing operations, Apple has implemented several measures:​

• Increased Workforce and Extended Operations: The company augmented its workforce and extended operational hours, including Sunday shifts, at the Foxconn facility in Chennai. These efforts aimed to achieve a 20% increase in production capacity. ​
• Expedited Customs Clearance: Apple successfully lobbied Indian authorities to reduce customs clearance times at Chennai airport from 30 hours to just six, facilitating swifter shipments

These strategic enhancements have led to a marked increase in exports from India to the U.S. Foxconn’s shipments were valued at $770 million in January and $643 million in February, a significant rise compared to the $110 million to $331 million range observed in the preceding months.

Analysts have expressed concerns that the elevated tariffs on Chinese imports could lead to substantial price increases for iPhones in the U.S. market. For instance, the cost of the high-end iPhone 16 Pro Max could escalate from $1,599 to approximately $2,300 if the tariffs are fully applied.

Apple is not alone in its efforts to navigate the complexities of the current trade environment. Other tech giants, including Dell, Microsoft, and Lenovo, are reportedly accelerating shipments of high-value products to the U.S. to preempt tariff-induced price increases.
