Former Meta Exec Hugo Barra Joins Sonos Board

Sonos has announced the appointment of Hugo Barra to its Board of Directors, effective April 7, 2025. Barra co-founded and currently leads product development at /dev/agents, a company focused on creating operating systems for AI agents.

Julius Genachowski, Chair of the Sonos Board, expressed enthusiasm about Barra’s addition, stating, “Hugo is a world-class technologist with senior executive experience at several of the most important and successful consumer tech companies.”

Barra’s impressive career includes pivotal roles at major tech firms. At Google, he served as Vice President for Android product management, leading the platform from its early stages to over a billion users. He then joined Xiaomi as Vice President, overseeing global operations and spearheading the company’s expansion beyond China.

Following his tenure at Xiaomi, Barra led Meta’s Oculus VR division as Vice President, contributing significantly to advancements in virtual reality technology.

This appointment comes at a crucial time for Sonos, as the company aims to recover from significant app issues experienced last year. The addition of Barra, with his extensive background in product innovation and AI, is seen as a strategic move to enhance Sonos’s technological capabilities.

In conjunction with Barra’s appointment, Sonos announced the departure of Mike Volpi, the company’s longest-serving director, who is stepping down after 15 years on the board.

Sonos continues to focus on enhancing its mobile app by addressing performance issues, fixing bugs, and reinstating previously removed features. The company recently canceled a planned streaming video player, codenamed Pinewood, as part of a reassessment of its product roadmap.

Upcoming projects include a new audio-video receiver and a successor to the Era 100 smart speaker.
