OpenAI Ventures into Social Media to Rival X and Threads

OpenAI is said to be developing a new social media platform that could rival Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) and Meta’s Threads, The Verge is reporting.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the project is in its early stages, featuring an internal prototype centered around ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities and a social feed.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has reportedly been seeking external feedback on the initiative, though it’s unclear whether the platform will launch as a standalone app or integrate into the existing ChatGPT application.

The potential launch of this social network comes amid escalating tensions between Altman and Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015 but departed in 2018. In February, Musk made an unsolicited $97.4 billion bid to acquire OpenAI, which Altman declined with a pointed response: “no thank you but we will buy twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.” This move also positions OpenAI in direct competition with Meta, which is reportedly developing a social feed for its upcoming AI assistant app.

An OpenAI social network could provide the company with valuable real-time data to train its AI models, a resource that competitors like X and Meta already leverage. Musk’s Grok AI, for instance, surfaces content from X in its results, while Meta trains its Llama models on extensive user data from its platforms.

The envisioned platform aims to utilize AI to assist users in creating and sharing more engaging content. This approach is based on the growing trend of integrating AI into social media to enhance user experience and content generation.

While the project’s future remains uncertain, its development indicates OpenAI’s ambition to expand, challenging established players and exploring new avenues for AI application.
