Apple’s AI Writing Tools Blocked in Facebook, Instagram Apps

Apple’s advanced AI-powered Writing Tools, a key feature of its Apple Intelligence suite, are absent from Meta’s iOS apps, including Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Threads, as noted by MacRumors.

Introduced with iOS 18, Apple’s Writing Tools offer users the ability to proofread, rewrite, and summarize text across various applications. Typically, a long press in a text input field activates these features, enhancing user communication by improving clarity and tone. However, users have observed that these tools are non-functional within Meta’s apps.

Apple allows third-party developers to enable or disable the integration of its AI features within their applications. The absence of Writing Tools in Meta’s apps suggests that Meta has chosen not to incorporate this functionality.

The relationship between Apple and Meta has been marked by competition and differing philosophies, particularly concerning user privacy and data handling. In mid-2024, discussions between the two companies about integrating Meta’s AI model into iOS 18 reportedly ended due to Apple’s privacy concerns.

Subsequently, Apple partnered with OpenAI to integrate ChatGPT into its ecosystem, emphasizing its commitment to user privacy and data security.

Meta has been actively developing its own AI capabilities, launching features like the Meta AI assistant across its platforms. The company plans to release a standalone AI application in 2025, aiming to compete directly with services like ChatGPT.

For users, the lack of Apple’s Writing Tools in Meta’s iOS apps means they won’t benefit from the enhanced text editing and summarization features when using these platforms.
