Strava Expands Coaching Capabilities with Runna Acquisition

Strava, the global leader in fitness tracking, has announced the acquisition of Runna, a UK-based app renowned for its personalized running training plans.

The move aims to integrate Runna’s AI-driven coaching capabilities with Strava’s extensive fitness platform, providing users with a more comprehensive training experience.

Strava, boasting over 150 million users across 185 countries, has identified running as its fastest-growing sport, with nearly one billion runs recorded on the platform in 2024. The acquisition of Runna addresses a previously noted gap in Strava’s services—offering structured, personalized training plans for runners.

Michael Martin, CEO of Strava, emphasized that the lack of in-app training guidance was a significant pain point for users, stating, “We came to realize that, as it related to runners, that guidance was training plans.”

Founded in 2021 by Dom Maskell and Ben Parker, Runna has quickly gained popularity for its AI-powered training plans catering to various running goals, from 5Ks to marathons. The app has attracted users from over 180 countries and was a finalist for Apple’s App of the Year in 2024. Runna has been profitable since 2023 and has operated primarily on its earnings, a testament to its efficient business model.

While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, both companies have expressed a commitment to enhancing user experience through this partnership.

Initially, Runna will continue to operate independently, with plans for deeper integration over time. Users can expect features such as seamless syncing of training plans and workout data between the two platforms.

Subscription models for Strava and Runna will, however, remain separate for the foreseeable future.
