Xbox is reviving its original Gears of War title with a full remaster called Gears of War: Reloaded, set to launch on August 26, 2025.
The updated version will be available for $39.99 USD on Xbox Series X/S, Windows PC, Xbox Cloud Gaming, PlayStation 5, and Steam. It also arrives day one on Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass subscribers.
Reloaded includes all the content from Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, with upgraded visuals, 4K graphics, up to 120 fps in multiplayer, and support for Dolby Atmos and 3D Spatial Audio. That’s a big upgrade versus the original that was built on Unreal Engine 3. It’s been rebuilt to run smoothly across all platforms and supports features like cross-play and cross-progression. Basically play and continue from any device.
Originally released in 2006, Gears of War is seen as changing the game for first person shooters. The remaster is ahead of the 20th anniversary next year. Xbox says Reloaded is meant to introduce a new generation to the series while giving longtime fans an upgraded way to relive the game that started it all.
Players who previously purchased the digital version of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition before May 5, 2025, will receive Reloaded for free via a code sent directly to their Xbox account. The game also includes two-player split-screen co-op, online multiplayer for up to eight players, and full access to all bonus campaign content and downloadable maps.
Gears of War: Reloaded was developed by The Coalition, with help from Sumo Interactive and Disbelief. It is now available to wishlist on Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam.
