Foxconn Commits $1.5 Billion to Expand iPhone Manufacturing in India

As Apple continues to diversify its manufacturing operations beyond China, Foxconn, the primary assembler of its iPhones, has announced a substantial investment of $1.5 billion into its Indian subsidiary, Bloomberg is reporting.

The announcement comes less than a week after Donald Trump publicly called on Apple CEO Tim Cook to cease the company’s ongoing transition of iPhone production to India.

The investment, disclosed through a stock exchange filing, is being funneled via Foxconn’s Singapore-based entity into Hon Hai Technology India Mega Development, a subsidiary registered in Maharashtra since 2015. While the specific allocation of funds remains unspecified, industry analysts anticipate that the capital will support the development of semiconductor facilities in India.

India has emerged as a pivotal hub for Apple’s manufacturing ambitions. In the fiscal year ending March 2025, Apple produced approximately $22 billion worth of iPhones in India, reflecting a significant uptick in local production.

Complementing Foxconn’s endeavors, other key players in Apple’s supply chain are also expanding their footprint in India. Tata Group, for instance, has acquired Wistron’s local operations and is now managing Pegatron Corp.’s India operations.

Furthermore, Foxconn is actively exploring opportunities in India’s burgeoning semiconductor sector. In collaboration with HCL Group, Foxconn has initiated plans to establish a semiconductor packaging and testing facility, with an initial investment of $37.2 million for a 40% stake in the venture.

As Apple continues to expand its manufacturing base, India’s role in the global electronics supply chain is set to become increasingly prominent.
