Apple Reportedly Testing 200 Megapixel Camera for iPhones

Apple is reportedly testing a 200-megapixel camera sensor, according to Digital Chat Station, a user with a large following on Chinese social media platform Weibo, as noted by MacRumors.

IPhone 200MP camera.

While the account’s post today does not provide any further details, this 200-megapixel camera sensor would likely be for the main rear camera on a future high-end iPhone model. It must be noted that the account has previously shared accurate information about Apple’s future products.

Samsung has already incorporated a 200MP sensor into its Galaxy S23 Ultra and the recently released Galaxy S24 Ultra. These devices have been praised for their high-resolution imagery, detailed cropping capabilities, and enhanced digital zoom. A similar move by Apple would position future iPhones to directly compete in the ultra-high-resolution photography space currently dominated by Samsung.

The benefits of a 200MP sensor extend beyond raw resolution. With pixel binning technology, larger sensors can combine multiple pixels into one to produce brighter, sharper images in low-light conditions.

Despite the excitement, industry watchers suggest that this upgrade is not imminent. The iPhone 17 Pro is rumored to introduce an all-48MP camera array in 2025, and no credible reports currently link the 200MP sensor to the iPhone 18 lineup in 2026. This points to a longer-term roadmap—possibly with the iPhone 19 or beyond.

The leaker’s report only mentions internal testing, which could mean Apple is exploring multiple hardware configurations for future use. Testing doesn’t always translate to production, so this camera might not be seen in a consumer-ready iPhone for several years—if ever.

Apple has historically taken a cautious and iterative approach to camera upgrades, focusing on computational photography, Smart HDR, and deep integration with iOS features. Even as competitors race ahead with raw specs, Apple tends to wait until the technology aligns with its software ecosystem before committing to new hardware.

That said, Apple does recognize the marketing power of camera features. Camera enhancements are one of the most emphasized points during iPhone launches, and a shift to a 200MP sensor would be a headline feature.

200MP is over-killed for everyday snapshots. Files will take up too much space.

They don't…Scamsung does 16:1 binning or 4:1 for high rez. You can get 200Mp pics but in this day and age the quality of pictures depends more on AI and post processing than pixel count.
Give me a 50Mp 1" sensor instead any day.

We might have to wait 5 years for Apple to put 1 inch sensor on their phones.
