According to recent reports, the company is developing the app, fresh off the heels of the release of its WhatsApp app for iPad.
This week, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman wrote that an Instagram app is well on its way to iPad in his latest Power On newsletter. According to Gurman, Meta is developing the app, and it’s expected that the Instagram app for iPad may be ready for launch this year.
iPad users have been actively clamouring for an Instagram app on iPad for years. Meta first launched its Facebook app on Apple’s tablet back in 2011. However, throughout the years, the company has not launched any of its other apps on iPad.
However, all of this changed last week. After years and years, Meta announced that WhatsApp for iPad is launching. The app supports video and audio calls with up to 32 people. Using iPadOS multitasking features, users can leverage Stage Manager, Split View, and Slide Over. WhatsApp for iPad also supports Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil.
As of the time of writing, there’s no word on whether Instagram will integrate any iPadOS-specific features. Meta has been incredibly silent on the development of its Instagram app. For a long time, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg was against the idea of launching apps on iPad. Back in the early era of the iPad, Zuckerberg scoffed at the idea of putting Facebook on the iPad, believing it was a “computer” and that users could simply go to the official web domain in a browser.
There’s still the big question of whether Meta will also develop an app for Threads on iPad as well. Gurman’s latest report doesn’t indicate that this may be the case.
