YouTube’s Latest Software Update Drops Support for Older iPhone Models

This is a PSA for those still using an older iPhone. YouTube has stopped supporting older iPhone models since releasing its version 20.22.1 software on iOS. The latest software now requires the use of iOS 16 or later, phasing out a number of compatible iPhones.

With the requirement of iOS 16 now to use the YouTube app, a slew of older iPhones won’t be able to use YouTube anymore. This includes the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7, and iPhone 7 Plus. Additionally, those who are still running on the first-gen iPhone SE or even the iPod touch 7 won’t be able to access the app moving forward.

All of this stems from the use of iOS 16. The aforementioned devices are not compatible with Apple’s latest generation of software. Thus, without the ability to install iOS 16 or later, the devices won’t be eligible to make use of YouTube’s version 20.22.1 software.

In addition, the version 20.22.1 software requires the use of iPadOS 16 or later. So, if you’re still holding onto your iPad Air 2 or iPad mini 4, you’re out of luck as well. YouTube has shuttered support on these devices, so you’ll no longer be able to access the app moving forward.

With all of this in mind, users on an older iPhone or iPad can still access YouTube via a web browser. However, they’ll lose out on all app benefits and quality of life functions.
