Spotify Royalties Surge for Canadian Artists, Topping $460 Million

Spotify has released its Loud and Clear report, offering a look at how its streaming economy is impacting Canadian artists and how they are generating royalties.
The Loud and Clear report is designed to offer a transparent look at how much artists are generating each year. The latest report spans 2024, supporting insights for generated royalties and distribution through streaming on Spotify. According to the report, Canadian artists generated nearly $460 million CAD in royalties from Spotify in 2024.
The company states that it has become the leading contributor to the music industry in Canada, driving revenue growth for Canadian artists and creators. The latest report goes on to dictate that artists generating between $50,000 and $1 million per year in revenue have doubled since 2017.
“Knowing that music is a global conversation without borders, it inspires me to know that virtually anyone can listen anywhere because of streaming,” Canadian artist Bryan Adams said. “It really hit home to me as a Canadian-born artist how important it is that we keep breaking down barriers and building bridges with our art. So thanks in no small part to Spotify, and thank you so much to all the fans around the world for listening and enjoying my music wherever that might be.”
In 2024, 92 percent of royalties generated by Canadian artists on Spotify came from listeners outside of Canada. Around 15 million hours of music made by Canadian artists are streamed every day globally. Canadian artists are said to be featured on 2.4 billion user playlists around the world.
Spotify Canada has also released its ‘Global Impact List’, spotlighting tracks from Canadian artists and the most-listened-to songs from January to October 2024. To no surprise, The Weeknd is featured extensively.

It’s also worth noting that Francophone music was one of the top-performing languages on Spotify, with royalties generated globally up 15 percent from 2023. Québécois artist Patrick Watson’s Je te laisserai des mots was the most popular Francophone song on Spotify in 2024.
Canadian woman artists have also been making history on Spotify. According to the report, over 40 percent of the Canadian artists who exceeded $1 million in 2024 on Spotify are women or perform in groups with both male and female members. Canada ranks as one of the top global markets for female representation amongst the highest revenue-generating artists on Spotify. This is alongside South Korea, Sweden and Argentina.
