How to Transfer Your Switch Data to Nintendo Switch 2

Today’s the big day as Nintendo Switch 2 has launched worldwide. As users receive their new consoles, it’s time to set up the Nintendo Switch 2. For many, this means transferring data and account information from the original Switch to the new hardware.

For those excitedly getting their Nintendo Switch 2 this week, players will want to carry their data and saves from the original Nintendo Switch. Thankfully, Nintendo provides a streamlined way to conduct a system transfer from Nintendo Switch to the Switch 2.

Nintendo’s system transfer includes the ability to carry over all digital software. Games and software is downloaded once the system transfer is completed and the initial console set up is complete on Nintendo Switch 2. Additionally, players can transfer profile data, save data, screenshots or video, and system settings. Unfortunately, the system transfer does not include Bluetooth audio, time, location, or regional settings.

To conduct a system transfer, you’ll need access to your original Nintendo Switch. Navigate to the ‘Settings’ menu and select ‘System’ and scroll down to ‘System Transfer to Nintendo Switch 2’. By selecting ‘ I Don’t Have a Nintendo Switch 2 Yet’, you can upload your data to Nintendo’s servers in anticipation of when your Nintendo Switch 2 arrives.

Follow the on-screen prompts until you’re sent a ‘Verification code’ to your My Nintendo account email address. Input the code and select ‘Send Data to the Server’. This will then upload your save data to Nintendo’s cloud servers. Once the upload is complete, you can review the system transfer information and select ‘Start Restoring Factory Settings’ to complete the process. Note: This will delete all data from the original console.

System transfers will retain Nintendo Switch data until it’s retrieved by you on your Nintendo Switch 2. It can be restored on an original Nintendo Switch if you wish. However, Nintendo notes that there is an expiry date for all system transfer data. The duration of data on Nintendo’s servers is up to one year from the day you upload. This is displayed when setting up the transfer.
