Meta Building ‘Superintelligence’ Team to Tackle Next-Gen AI: Report

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is personally putting together a top-tier “superintelligence” team with the goal of developing artificial general intelligence (AGI) — the kind of next-gen AI that can perform at human-level across a wide range of tasks, according to a new report from Bloomberg.

Frustrated with the underwhelming reception to Meta’s Llama 4 language model, Zuckerberg has reportedly taken a more hands-on approach in recent months, entering what insiders described as “founder mode.” He’s been holding private meetings with promising AI researchers and engineers at his homes in Lake Tahoe and Palo Alto, pitching a bold vision of AGI that could power everything from features on Meta’s social networks and chatbots to its Ray-Ban smart glasses.

Internally dubbed the “superintelligence” group, the new team is expected to include around 50 hires, including a new head of AI research. Zuckerberg is personally leading the recruitment effort — even starting a WhatsApp group with senior Meta leadership called “Recruiting Party” to scout and vet top talent.

The news comes just weeks after reports surfaced of Meta overhauling its AI division. It also coincides with the social media giant’s expected multi-billion-dollar investment in Scale AI, a leading developer of training data tools for enterprise and government AI applications. Scale AI founder Alexandr Wang is reportedly joining Zuckerberg’s new task force as well.

Zuckerberg believes Meta’s strong advertising revenue can bankroll the immense computing power required to compete with AI frontrunners like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic — and he’s told potential recruits the company is ready to build a multi-gigawatt data center to support its ambitions. Meta previously unveiled plans to spend up to $65 billion USD in capital expenditures on AI infrastructure this year.

While it’s unclear how the new group will work with Meta’s existing AI teams, one thing is certain: Zuckerberg is betting big — and personally — on AI’s future. Sources said the Meta CEO has even rearranged desks at the company’s Menlo Park headquarters to have the new staff sit near him.
