Snap’s Immersive Specs Glasses Coming in 2026

Snap has announced its plans to launch its Specs glasses in 2026. During the Augmented World Expo in Long Beach, California, CEO Evan Spiegel pulled the curtain back on what the consumer-level AR glasses will hold.
Snap’s Specs will boast a similar suite of AR-integrated features as the fifth-generation Spectacles, which are positioned for developers. However, Spigel emphasizes that Specs will be far smaller and lighter by comparison. The idea is to develop and create a pair of AR glasses that can be comfortably worn in public. This has been a hurdle for the company, as previous AR glasses have been more bulky in order to accommodate the technology.
The Specs will supposedly feature see-through lenses that will be capable of rendering graphics to the user. The glasses will be able to display images as if they were in front of the user in real life. The company confirms that it’ll also integrate advanced machine learning in order to leverage AI assistance for the 3D space. There will also be shared games and experiences that users can take part in. Additionally, Snap confirms that Specs will offer users a workstation, browsing, streaming, and more.
“The arrival of Snapchat Spectacles in Canada is an exciting development for the Canadian XR developer community and the global augmented reality landscape! We’re at the precipice of a transformative era where digital seamlessly fuses with our physical world, enriching every facet of our lives – and Spectacles are unlocking opportunity and pushing limits in all the best ways,” said Dr. Helen Papagiannis, Ph.D., a world-renowned expert in immersive and emerging technologies and Founder of XR Goes Pop. “I can’t wait to see what the country’s talented ecosystem of XR developers and producers can build in the Snap OS, and how we will use those experiences to optimize our daily lives.”
The company has been investing in AR initiatives for nearly a decade. In 2016, Snap first launched Spectacles, a consumer-facing pair of smart glasses. This investment did not entirely pan out for the company, as the first generation of Spectacles was considered a market failure. However, Snap continued to invest in AR initiatives. Flash forward, and now larger tech companies are all competing to get a slice of the pie. This includes the likes of Apple, Meta, and Google.
Specs will be powered by the company’s SnapOS developer ecosystem. Working with developers, Snap aims to offer a library of apps and experiences. The company has spent years making close relationships with developers, making AR experiences known as Lenses for Snapchat and Spectacles.
On top of the announcement for Specs, Snap has also confirmed that the fifth-generation Spectacles are now available for XR and AR developers in Canada. Developers in the country can now join the Spectacles Developer Program. For the annual price of $139, developers can subscribe to the program and be given access to Spectacles and the Spectacles team to assist in the creation of software.
As of the time of writing, there’s no word on what Specs will cost when they launch in 2026.
