Donkey Kong Bananza Nintendo Switch 2: What You Need to Know

Nintendo has revealed full details for Donkey Kong Bananza, a new 3D platformer starring Donkey Kong and featuring co-op play with singer-turned-sidekick Pauline. The game launches July 17 exclusively on the Nintendo Switch 2.
Donkey Kong’s latest adventure begins on Ingot Isle, where golden bananas are discovered underground. But before DK can enjoy the bounty, he gets knocked deep into the planet and teams up with a mysterious character named Odd Rock, later revealed to be Pauline. Together, they explore the Underground World, battling enemies, uncovering secrets, and chasing a legendary core said to grant any wish.
Gameplay Highlights:
- Smash and dig: DK can punch, roll, tear through ground, and uncover hidden items.
- Transformations: Pauline’s singing powers unlock new temporary forms for Donkey Kong, including ones that boost speed, flight, or strength.
- Co-op play: Two players can team up locally—one controlling DK, the other Pauline. Some functions even work with only one copy of the game via GameShare.
- Collectibles: Players can find golden Banandium Gems, trade Banandium Chips and Gold, and discover Fossils to unlock outfits and fur colours.
- New characters: Expect to meet familiar faces like Cranky Kong and Rambi, and new ones like Grumpy Kong and Void Kong, the game’s villain.
- Fast travel and rest: Eelevators (yes, eel-shaped elevators) let players jump between layers. Getaways let DK nap and recover energy.
- Photo Mode and DK Artist: Capture your own in-game moments or carve stone designs using motion controls.
- amiibo support: Donkey Kong and Pauline amiibo unlock early items and upgrades. Other amiibo give materials and bonus items.
VoidCo, the game’s villainous mining company, is after the Planet Core too. It’s responsible for stealing bananas, burying DK, and transforming Pauline. Now the duo is racing them to the bottom of the world.
Donkey Kong Bananza launches July 17 for Nintendo Switch 2 and will be priced at $99.99 in Canada and can be pre-ordered now on Amazon.ca.
