YouTube Rolls Out AI-Enhanced Search and Shorts Tools

YouTube is rolling out a host of new AI–powered tools this summer as part of its ongoing effort to supercharge video search, creation, and monetization for creators and viewers alike.

At the heart of the rollout is an AI overviews carousel that will appear at the top of search result lists for selected queries such as shopping, travel, or things to do in specific locales.

Eligible YouTube Premium subscribers using iOS or Android devices will see a video clip highlighted at the top, followed by related video thumbnails and a brief AI-generated summary of the topic. Tapping the top clip takes users directly to the full video. This feature has entered a trial phase in the U.S. that runs through July 30th and currently supports English-language content only.

In tandem with the search enhancements, YouTube is boosting access to conversational AI within the app. Viewers can ask questions about a video, probe for related content, or explore deeper into the topic. This interactive Q&A capability, previously limited to Premium users, is now being opened to a broader segment of non-Premium users in the U.S.

On the creator side, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan previewed new creative tools at Cannes Lions and linked them to the platform’s milestone 20th anniversary. The centerpiece is the integration of Google DeepMind’s Veo 3 text-to-video model into YouTube Shorts this summer.

Veo 3, released last month, produces short clips with both video and audio from text prompts, marking a significant leap in generative AI capabilities.

YouTube has built earlier AI tools such as Dream Screen and auto dubbing that reached more than 20 million videos across nine languages, with additional language support forthcoming.

The addition of Veo 3 to Shorts is expected to further lower barriers to creative expression by enabling users to produce short-form video content through simple text prompts, though concerns remain about the potential for low‑quality output.
