President Trump Cuts Off Canada Over Digital Tax, Threatens Tariffs
U.S. President Donald Trump announced Friday that he is ending all trade discussions with Canada, following the country’s decision to implement a new tax on American tech companies.
In a statement posted to his social network Truth Social, Trump called Canada “a very difficult country to trade with,” criticizing what he described as longstanding unfair treatment of American farmers. “They have charged our Farmers as much as 400% Tariffs, for years, on Dairy Products,” he wrote.
Trump claimed the new Digital Services Tax (DST)—which targets large U.S. technology firms—is “a direct and blatant attack on our Country.” He accused Canada of copying similar policies from the European Union, which is also in ongoing discussions with the U.S. over its digital tax approach.
“Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately,” Trump declared. He added that the U.S. will announce retaliatory tariffs within the next 7 days. “We will let Canada know the Tariff that they will be paying to do business with the United States of America,” he said.
“Thank you for your attention to this matter!” said Trump, in what’s becoming his boilerplate tagline on Truth Social.
Back in February, Trump’s new trade policy said it would target our Digital Service Tax.
The DST will be applied retroactively to 2022 and is aimed at revenue earned from Canadian users. It targets major tech giants like Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple, and Microsoft—some of the biggest players in global digital revenue.
The tax also covers online marketplaces such as eBay, Amazon, and Airbnb, along with platforms like Netflix, TikTok, and Spotify for any subscriptions or user activity in Canada. The federal government says the goal is to ensure these companies contribute their fair share.
Just last week, Canada’s biggest business associations wrote to Prime Minister Mark Carney to reconsider the tax, which he said will impact Canadian investments such as pension funds.

Gotta love getting attention again from the idiot-in-chief. More lies and stupidity for all the world to see.
I love that we're getting closer to Europe and further away from the squealing trumpet.
It's also funny to see him getting ignored or made fun of by other world leaders.
Who needs him?
I completely agree…. let's align with Europe and nations that want to be trading partners. The US will one day look back at this and realize that their "Commander and Chief" made a huge mistake. Love how all the MAGA drinkers think he is still the greatest thing since sliced bread.
"No one needs him"…said the Canadian doing 80% of trade with the orange man and 10% with socialist EU. You don't have to like him to see reality staring you in the face.
Do you buy everything that MSM serves?
Who do I trust? The news or Eric Cartman?
Weaaaaaaaaaaaak
I have yet to see a liebtard making an actual argument based on facts. Nope, it’s always ad hominem attacks.
Enjoy your ignorance….it’s bliss.
It blows my mind that these people that go off on Trump seem to forget that most of the Canadian economy is dependent of the USofA and apparently like getting taxed more and more.
Most of this big tech, like them or not is highly coveted by most people.
In fact the people disagreeing with you are quite likely heavy users of them too.
Seems many Canadians still haven't woken up and faced reality yet.
Trump: Tariffs on China at 218% (thanks chat GPT for the random number)
two weeks later oh f**k we made a huge mistake bring that down to 40% oh god.
A monkey with half a brain could do a better job at running a country. But all the magats seem to think someone who goes on nonsensical 12 year old rants on social media at 2 in the morning and who bankrupted well over a dozen businesses is going to ….take care of the people over his own financial gain? You can't fix stupid.
No you can't fix stupid but it is also apparent that you can't stop Liberals from raising taxes either.
Sadly, Carney has caved to Agent Orange.
I suppose to no great surprise, Carney's tough talk prior to and during election, stating tough and equitable laws to the US (and others) continues to evaporate. Corporation making tens of millions in profit in our country? No tax for you! Its like Carney is the Leader of Con Lite.
Perhaps not surprising then that '51st State' is being floated again, too – with absolutely no reaction from our government.
Will Canada Day be in name only, Mr Carney?
We showed them who's boss….oh wait – did Canada just do an about-face and rescind the Digital Service Tax"?
