Spotify Adds New Controls to Discover Weekly, Adding Up to Five Genres

Celebrating the 10th anniversary of Discover Weekly, Spotify is giving the feature a well-rounded refresh. This includes adding the ability to choose between up to five different genres for the playlist.

From now on, users will be able to select a genre type at the top of the Discover Weekly playlist. As announced by Spotify, these options will appear based on your listening history. Once selected, a playlist of 30 songs is created and updated each week on Monday.

For the uninitiated, Spotify’s Discover Weekly is exactly what it sounds like. It’s an easy-to-use playlist that pulls new songs to help users discover artists and tracks that may be outside of their habits. According to Spotify, Discover Weekly has led to over 100 billion tracks being streamed. The discovery feature now allows users to find more than 56 million artists every week. The streamer notes that 77 percent of them are emerging artists as opposed to well-known, established artists.

Discover Weekly also receives cosmetic changes as part of the refresh. Spotify notes that the changes are made to reflect “its ever-evolving nature and the dynamic energy of weekly discovery.” As part of this the look of Discover Weekly updates every Monday alongside the new playlist.

Access to the new Discover Weekly features is rolling out to Spotify Premium users now. However, the company announced that everyone will have access to it “soon”. Genres are now available to select from. The feature will be available on mobile accounts over “the coming weeks.”
