Ikea Unveils Major Smart Home Reboot with Matter Devices and New Speakers

Ikea has announced a major reboot of its smart home lineup, with plans to launch over 20 new Matter-over-Thread devices starting in January 2026. The new product range — featuring smart bulbs, sensors, remotes, and “more new product types and form factors to come” — will be compatible with Matter ecosystems like Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings, with no Ikea hub required.

The shift to Matter comes as Ikea winds down its partnership with Sonos. The Symfonisk speaker series, a collaboration between the two companies, is being phased out this year. In its place, Ikea is introducing a new line of affordable Bluetooth speakers, including the $50 retro-inspired Nattbad and the Blomprakt speaker-lamp combo launching in October.

“We’ve learned a lot from our experience with Zigbee and Sonos,” Ikea’s David Granath told The Verge. He says the move to Matter is part of a long-term strategy to simplify the smart home while keeping prices low. “The premium to make a product smart isn’t that high anymore.”

Ikea also recently updated its Dirigera smart home hub, turning it into a Matter Controller and Thread Border Router. The hub now supports Matter 1.4 and Thread 1.4, with broader device support planned as new Ikea products launch.

Interestingly, many of Ikea’s new Matter devices will also work without a hub or app, offering direct setup via any Matter-compatible platform. Granath says Ikea’s goal is to remove complexity and make smart home tech accessible to “the many people.”

With this reboot, Ikea is positioning itself as one of the first major retailers to bring Matter into the mainstream — despite the standard’s slower-than-expected rollout so far.
