LightShed Urges Apple to Replace CEO Tim Cook

Analysts at LightShed Partners have urged Apple to contemplate appointing a new CEO, suggesting that Tim Cook’s expertise in logistics may no longer meet the company’s current challenges (via Bloomberg).

In a client note dated July 9, analysts Walter Piecyk and Joe Galone emphasized that Apple is entering a critical phase that demands a leader intensely focused on product innovation rather than supply chain management.

They highlighted that while Cook’s tenure has delivered remarkable financial performance—including a more than 1,400 percent surge in stock price—Apple appears to lag behind rivals in artificial intelligence, risking long-term competitiveness.

Central to LightShed’s critique is Apple’s perceived sluggishness in generative AI. Despite unveiling its “Apple Intelligence” initiative at WWDC 2024, the company has yet to integrate advanced AI features in a manner that matches offerings from competitors such as Microsoft, Meta, and Google.

Their analysis warned that missing the AI wave “could fundamentally alter the company’s long‑term trajectory and ability to grow at all,” fueling concerns that Apple risks following in the footsteps of once-dominant but now-obsolete tech firms.

Meanwhile, Apple’s Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams, who was once considered Cook’s likely successor, is set to retire later this year and will be replaced by veteran Sabih Khan. With Williams’s departure, speculation around succession has intensified, and attention has pivoted to John Ternus, Apple’s SVP of hardware engineering.

Apple’s stock performance has slid approximately 16% in 2025, underperforming rival tech stocks like Meta (+25%) and Microsoft (+19%). This decline has occurred alongside executive departures—beyond Williams, both CFO Luca Maestri and head of AI Ruoming Pang have exited.

Despite LightShed’s calls, the analysts acknowledged that Cook was the right leader at the time of his appointment and has done an outstanding job. However, they contend that current conditions demand disruptive change aimed at regaining momentum in product innovation and AI.

Are you kidding me? He's a pain in the B.. for Trump… That's probably where that "suggestion" is coming from anyway

Although an expert in supply chain management, Cook is hardly one dimensional CEO. You don’t become a CEO of Apple as a one trick pony. He can surely refocus on product innovation and at the point where his capabilities end, he can hire capable people who can take it further.

100%. Unfortunately it is too late for Apple. It will be all about stock prices for the next decade. It's sad that innovation is off the stove completely.
