iPad Pro (2025) Expected to Feature M5 Chip and Two Front-Facing Cameras

Apple’s next-gen iPad Pro is reported to be featuring a number of upgrades, including the adoption of the M5 chipset as well as two front-facing camera.

Word comes by way of Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman, who notes that the M5 chip may be used in the iPad Pro in the latest Power On newsletter. Gurman claims that the upcoming iPad Pro will offer both landscape and portrait orientations, allowing users to make video calls and capture photos no matter how the iPad Pro is held.

With an update from the M4 series, which the current iPad Pro utilizes, to the M5 processor, the upcoming iPad Pro could offer elevated efficiency, further bridging the gap between the tablet and Apple’s MacBook line. The M4 iPad Pro also introduced an OLED display and a thinner design. However, beyond that, the current iPad Pro doesn’t bring many key updates over its own predecessor. The M4 iPad Pro only features one front-facing camera, designed to be used in landscape mode.

Earlier this year, it was reported that updated iPad Pro models were being codenamed J817, J818, J820, and J821 and are expected to enter production in the second half of the year. These devices will be the first to adopt the M5 chip. This is likely before Apple begins bringing its M5 series of chips to other devices.

It’s also reported that Apple has begun development of its M6 series iPads, featuring house-made cellular modems. However, M6 isn’t expected until 2027.

Given that Apple usually operates on an 18-month cycle between iPad Pro releases, the M5 models could launch as soon a September or October of this year. Apple’s M4 iPad Pro launched on May 15, 2024.
