Proton’s New ‘Lumo’ AI Assistant Keeps Your Data Private
Proton has just announced the launch of ‘Lumo,’ its privacy-first AI assistant for email and calendar that keeps all your data encrypted and never used for training or profiling.

Integrated initially into Proton Mail and Proton Calendar, Lumo is built from the ground up with the promise of not mining user data, offering a sharp contrast to AI tools developed by big tech firms.
Lumo’s key feature is that it runs without profiling users or storing queries. Every interaction is encrypted, and Proton promises that no data is used to train the assistant as most current models rely heavily on user behavior to refine results and responses.
Proton instead leverages its own secure infrastructure and architecture to run Lumo in a zero-access environment. That means not even Proton’s own systems can read the data passing through its servers. Proton CEO Andy Yen has emphasized that the company is taking a principled stance against surveillance capitalism.
From launch, Lumo is capable of summarizing lengthy email threads, drafting smart replies, and assisting in scheduling tasks in Proton Calendar. While these features are now commonplace in AI-powered productivity tools, what sets Lumo apart is its refusal to compromise on privacy. Unlike Gmail’s AI-based Smart Reply or Microsoft’s Copilot integration in Outlook, Lumo avoids user profiling entirely.
Lumo also reflects Proton’s broader vision of establishing a private digital ecosystem. It joins a growing suite of tools including Proton Drive, Proton VPN, and Proton Pass. Each of these offerings is backed by end-to-end encryption, and none of them rely on targeted advertising or data monetization.

As of now, Lumo is being gradually rolled out to Proton Mail and Calendar users. Proton has indicated that more features and expanded availability are coming later this year, with plans to integrate Lumo into other services like Proton Drive and Proton Pass. A mobile version is also in the works.

It isn't integrated with Proton Mail or Calendar, although Proton Scribe is a generative AI feature available on select paid Proton Mail plans.
Why isn't Apple Mail/Chat/Drive/iCloud/AI included in the table? It would tick the first four items in the list, coming in second behind lumo/Proton.
