Telus Makes It Official: It’s the Network for Cogeco Wireless

Cogeco has officially entered the mobile market in Ontario and Quebec, and it’s using Telus’ network to do it.

In an official statement on Thursday, Telus said it’s “pleased to serve as the wholesale wireless network provider enabling Cogeco’s entry into the mobile market,” under the CRTC’s MVNO framework.

iPhone in Canada previously first told you Cogeco was using the Telus wireless network.

Telus CEO Darren Entwistle said the company is fulfilling its regulatory obligations by giving Cogeco access to its national wireless infrastructure.

“Cogeco will be able to access Telus’ wireless network in Cogeco’s incumbent operating territories in Ontario and Quebec,” he said. That access is possible “owing to Telus’ expansion of its original wireless footprint from Western Canada to national coverage.”

Entwistle added that Telus supports “healthy competition for Canadians,” but also called on the government to apply the same rules to fibre access in Eastern Canada: “We urge the same spirit of fairness in wholesale fibre access for Telus across Eastern Canada, so that all Canadians, regardless of geography, can benefit from greater choice, innovation and affordability.”

Telus reiterated its wireless network is Canada’s most awarded for speed, reliability, coverage and quality. The company is also investing $2 billion over five years in Ontario and Quebec to expand its broadband reach, including PureFibre and wireless services bundled with “AI-powered smart home energy solutions, personalized healthcare, accessible security, and immersive entertainment.”

That investment is part of a broader $70 billion commitment through 2029 that Telus announced earlier this year. Since 2000, the company says it has committed more than $276 billion to its networks and operations across Canada.

Telus says it continues to advocate for a regulatory environment that ensures “fairness, transparency, and national consistency in wholesale access,” adding, “when competition is symmetrical, Canadians across the country are the ultimate beneficiaries.”

For now, Cogeco’s wireless ambitions are targeting low to mid data users, while it’s only available for wireline customers to start.
