Microsoft Rolls Out AIl-New Copilot Mode in Edge Browser

Microsoft has rolled out a bold new feature called Copilot Mode in its Edge browser, transforming browsing into an AI-enhanced experience that merges search, chat, and navigation into one cohesive interface.

This feature is launching as an experimental, opt-in mode for Edge users on both Windows and macOS in supported Copilot regions.

Instead of the traditional multi-tab routine, Copilot Mode presents users with a simplified new tab page featuring a single input box. From there, Microsoft’s AI assistant anticipates your needs, offering suggestions and helping you find answers faster.

One standout capability is Actions, a hands-free assistant that can perform voice-driven tasks like opening multiple tabs, comparing options, or navigating to key sections within pages. Microsoft has promised that Copilot will soon be allowed (with user consent) to access browser history and login credentials to automate practical tasks such as booking hotels or managing errands directly in your tab.

At launch, Copilot Mode is available for free in supported markets, with usage limits suggesting that future access may require a subscription. Microsoft stresses that user control remains central. Copilot Mode is optional and only accessible once the user opts in. Visual indicators show when Copilot is active and reviewing content, and it can be disabled at any point from Edge’s settings.

While critics are worried about the implications of an AI assistant accessing sensitive browsing data, Microsoft has responded by emphasizing full transparency, optional data sharing, and compliance with its trusted privacy standards. All permissions must be explicitly granted, and users remain in control at all times, says the company.

Early tests by The Verge and PCWorld reveal the Copilot Mode streamlines web navigation by reducing clutter and increasing efficiency, an enticing prospect for heavy browser users and professionals alike.
