Apple Rolls Out ChatGPT‑Style AI Support Assistant

Apple has launched an early preview of a generative‑AI Support Assistant in the U.S. Apple Support app to answer device support queries using ChatGPT‑style chat (via MacRumors).

While still unavailable to most users, a select group of iPhone customers are already seeing the feature appear in their app’s navigation bar.

The new Support Assistant is designed as a ChatGPT‑style chatbot built for technical support. Once a user taps the dedicated Chat button, the assistant introduces itself with a splash screen explaining how it works. From there, users can ask questions about Apple devices, services, and troubleshooting.

If the AI agent cannot resolve the issue, it offers the option to escalate the session to a live support advisor.

Apple has also refreshed its Terms of Use on its website to confirm this upgrade. The legal page clearly states the feature “uses generative models,” and cautions that outputs may occasionally be “incorrect, misleading, incomplete, offensive, or harmful.” It confirms the assistant is strictly limited to providing technical support content.

Though official launch timing is not yet public, Apple first updated the app in mid‑July, and the Terms page reflects the same July 15 date. This pattern suggests Apple is preparing the backend ahead of a broader rollout, possibly region‑by‑region. So far, the Terms have only been posted in the U.S., hinting that the feature may initially be U.S.-only.

By guiding users through troubleshooting steps or providing device insights, the assistant could improve customer experience and ease support load. Former Apple Genius Bar employees have also praised the move, noting it could reduce unnecessary store visits.
