Apple’s iPhone 17 Cases May Feature AirPods Pro-Like Lanyard Loop

According to trusted leakers Majin Bu and DuanRui, Apple plans to include lanyard loop slots at the bottom of its official iPhone 17 cases, mirroring the design first seen on the AirPods Pro 2 accessory (via 9to5Mac).

DuanRui claims the iPhone 17 Pro series case may feature two lanyard hole openings at its base. Majin Bu further corroborates this by showcasing a “Liquid Silicone” Apple case design with loop slots akin to those on the AirPods, a move that signals Apple’s shift toward blending style with added utility.

The decision to embed lanyard support seems influenced by Apple’s continued push of the iPhone as a dedicated camera gear. Much like point-and-shoot cameras that include wrist straps for drop prevention, Apple is likely thinking about reducing accidental losses during photography. The company has already introduced a physical Camera Control button to complement this direction.

This would mark the first time Apple offers a lanyard option for its branded iPhone cases, though third-party case makers such as Bellroy have long offered similar features.

Historically, Apple included a retractable lanyard on early iPod touch models, though that was dropped in later revisions. This renewed interest may be a nod to that former, but underused, camera-ready accessory.

The potential integration of lanyard support, inspired by AirPods Pro 2 design, is becoming part of a broader theme in Apple’s evolving iPhone 17 range. The iPhone 17 series, expected to debut in mid-September, includes several models, standard, Air, Pro, and Pro Max, each bringing its own distinct enhancements.

Rumors hint that the iPhone 17 Air may stand out with its ultra-thin profile and titanium-aluminum frame, while the Pro models focus on performance and functionality.

Feature differences between models may push Apple to equip cases with added practical options like these lanyard slots, the company appears mindful of the habits of image-conscious users.

I just ordered a wrist strap for my iPhone from a 3rd party for the same reasons. 🙂
