Sam Altman Talks GPT-5 Launch Mistakes and Future Plans

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently spoke frankly during an intimate dinner with The Verge about the rocky debut of GPT-5 and the company’s ambitious trajectory.

Altman admitted that the rollout did not go as planned and noted that the bar charts featured in the livestream presentation inadvertently misled viewers, a misstep he attributed to human error caused by exhaustion ahead of the event.

The backlash triggered a swift response including the reinstatement of the beloved GPT-4o model after strong user protest. Altman emphasized that despite criticism, GPT-5 remains the new default and fullness of features make it unnecessary for users to switch between models.

Altman highlighted record breaking user engagement and dramatic surges in API traffic, a strong indicator of continued demand. He also announced plans for overwhelming infrastructure growth backed by multi-trillion-dollar investments in data center construction to support future scale.

During the conversation Altman acknowledged the current atmosphere of inflated valuations and speculative investments in AI as a bubble, reminiscent of the dot-com boom, yet he remains convinced that AI holds enduring significance. He shared that OpenAI plans to enter adjacent domains including consumer hardware and even explore a brain computer interface to rival Neuralink.

Perhaps most unexpected was Altman’s openness to acquiring Google Chrome if antitrust actions force its divestiture. He did not rule out such a move if the right conditions align. Meanwhile the company is also quietly advancing an AI powered browser that could challenge Google’s longstanding dominance by integrating ChatGPT like agents directly into the browsing experience.

Altman also mentioned OpenAI’s budding social media ambitions to create a feed driven by AI generated content and image creation. Whether this takes form as a standalone app or is woven into existing platforms still remains under consideration.

On a personal note, Altman hinted that his tenure as CEO may not extend indefinitely. He projected that an AI system could assume leadership responsibilities within a few years, metaphorically or literally.
