Spotify Introducing DM Feature to Help Organize Recommendations

Starting this week, Spotify is rolling out a new DM feature to both Free and Premium users in select markets. With this new feature, users will be able to send and organize recommendations to friends and family.
Announced via a blog post, Spotify states that it wanted to design a “dedicated space within the app to share songs, podcasts, or audiobooks they’re excited about.” With this, users will be able to share messages and chat about what they are listening to within the app.
Once the feature is accessible, users will be able to engage in one-on-one conversations, share content, texts, and emojis, and interact with friends and other users (above the age of 16) within the app. Spotify states that DM conversations are protected by “industry-standard encryption.”
To share a piece of content, whether a song, podcast, or audiobook, simply tap the ‘Share’ icon within the ‘Now Playing’ view. You’ll then be able to select a friend and hit ‘Send.’ Users will then have to accept a message request. Once accepted, the two users can exchange texts, emojis, and content back and forth. Messages are then accessible by going to your profile photo in the top left corner.
Additionally, users are able to see suggested people to message based on things they’ve liked in the past. If a user has joined Jams, Blends, or collaborative playlists, those users will be suggested. Similarly, if you’re part of a Family or Duo plan, the other members will also be suggested.
With the incorporation of DMs, Spotify has included new policies within its Terms of Use and Platform Rules against illegal and harmful content. Messages that may infringe on its policies may be reported by holding down on the message and selecting ‘Report’. Users can also be blocked.
Spotify clarifies that DMs is an optional feature. Users can choose to opt out of receiving DMs altogether within the Settings.
