Google Launches Pixel Care+ Device Protection, Not in Canada Yet

Pixel care plus.

Google has rolled out a new protection plan for its hardware called Pixel Care+ (naming scheme sounds familiar…), which covers repairs, replacements, and extended warranty claims for Pixel devices. The program is available starting today in the United States, but not yet in Canada.

Pixel Care+ works similar to Apple’s AppleCare+, offering perks such as unlimited accidental damage claims, $0 screen and battery repairs, free replacements for post-warranty malfunctions, and access to genuine Google parts. Customers also get priority support from Google staff and next-day shipping on replacements. Optional loss and theft coverage can be added as well.

In Canada, AppleCare+ comes with deductibles from $39 per incident for iPhone screen and back glass damage and $129 for other accidental damage. For iPhone, AppleCare+ is available at $169 for 2 years or $8.49/month until cancelled.

The service replaces Google’s existing Preferred Care and Fi Device Protection programs, which will be migrated over in the coming months. Users can sign up for Pixel Care+ within 60 days (just like Apple) of buying a new Pixel device, regardless of whether it was purchased from the Google Store or another retailer. Claims can be filed online through the Google Store or the new My Pixel app.

For now, the program is limited to the U.S. Google has not announced when, or if, Pixel Care+ will expand to Canada. The announcement comes ahead of tomorrow’s launch of new Pixel 10 devices in Canada.

A significant difference here is that in most urban areas of Canada, you can actually walk into an Apple Store, the issue assessed and some work can be done on-site. Google doesn't have that infrastructure, so it means a mail-in, with no clear timeline beforehand as to when you get it back.

In the US they have that infrastructure if not with Google Stores then t with authorized (in-warranty) service centres. This is not available in Canada. It takes an unhinged mindset to consider an expensive Google Phone which is not much cheaper than a flagship device from Apple or Samsung
