WhatsApp to Introduce Live Photos Support in Latest iOS Beta

WhatsApp’s latest iOS beta has been released via TestFlight. Version 25.24.10.72 introduces Live Photos support to beta testers ahead of a hopeful wider launch.

As first reported by WabetainfoLive Photos support is made available in chats, groups and channels as part of the latest beta. Similar to the support for motion photos on Android, users are able to a Live Photo with a motion indicator available for others to see. Other users within a chat can then interact with the animated content.

Up until this point, when a user attempted to share a Live Photo on WhatsApp, it only sent as a static photo. However, WhatsApp did offer the option to send a Live Photo as a GIF when a user would tap and hold the photo. That said, the quality of GIFs are limited, removing much of the quality in many Live Photos.

WhatsApp is reported to be offering cross-platform compatibility. For instnce, when an iOS user sends a Live Photo to an Android user, it appears as a motion photo. The same can be said is a Android user sends a motion photo to an iOS user. It’ll be available to view as a Live Photo.

Although WhatsApp is begining to support Live Photos on iOS, it’ll still allow users to control how Live Photos are shared. For instance, users can send a photo and remove the motion if they choose.

Access to this feature is limited to select users who have the latest 25.24.10.72 beta installed. WhatsApp is believed to be gradually monitoring the experience before rolling it out to more users oer time. Though, it’s likely that WhatsApp will rollout support to more users in the coming weeks.
