Here’s Everything Nintendo Announced to Celebrate the Super Mario Bros. 40th Anniversary

Today, Nintendo held a lengthy 60-minute Direct presentation, with a healthy amount dedicated to everyone’s favourite plumber, Mario. Here’s what Nintendo announced as part of the upcoming 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros.
On Saturday, September 13th, the company celebrates 40 years of the pivotal Nintendo franchise. With this, the company made a series of game reveals, updates and announcements to commemorate the occasion.
Before we dive into the game announcements, Nintendo and animation house Illumination announced that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is the official title of the upcoming sequel to the 2023 film. The new entry released exclusively in theatres on April 3, 2026.
To compound the exciting announcement of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Nintendo is bringing Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 to Nintendo Switch as a physical bundle to purchase for $99.99. It’s worth noting that both games will be available separately digitally.
Super Mario Bros. Wonder is getting a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, with the Meetup in Bellabel Park new game mode to check out when the update is made available next year.
New game titles include Mario Tennis Fever, which makes its way to Nintendo Switch 2 on February 12, 2026. In the new sports game, play as a roster of characters, armed with Fever Rackets, offering special abilities to gain an edge on the court. Set fire to opponents, lay a sheet of ice on the court or create a shadow copy of yourself in a bid to win the match.
Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in Spring 2026. As an homage to early Yoshi’s Island games, embark on a quest within a mysterious book and uncover new creatures as Yoshi.
Elsewhere, the Nintendo Direct gave us some non-Mario announcements as well. This includes the Donkey Kong Bananza: DK Island & Emerald Rush DLC, which is available for $29.99 starting today. Metroid Prime 4 has also finally been given a release date of December 4th. It’s been a long time coming for Metroid fans, but this winter, the long-awaited game will finally be available on Nintendo Switch and Switch 2.
The Nintendo Direct concluded with the reveal of Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, the latest in the series. The turn-based tactical RPG will arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 sometime in 2026.
