Canadians Need a Full Week’s Work for iPhone 17 Pro: Study

Canadians need about five full workdays to afford Apple’s new iPhone 17 Pro, ranking 13th out of 33 countries, according to Tenscope’s 2025 iPhone Affordability Index.

The study, published by UX design agency Tenscope, found Canadians pay $1,154 US for the iPhone 17 Pro (256 GB), compared to the U.S. price of $1,099 — a $55, or 5%, premium. While that puts Canada slightly behind the U.S., where workers need just under four days, it still places the country in the top tier globally, tied with Australia, Germany, Ireland, Finland, and Austria.

At the high end of affordability, workers in Luxembourg and Switzerland can buy the phone after just three days of work. At the other end, workers in India face 160 days, while those in the Philippines and Vietnam need 101 and 99 days, respectively. Across all countries studied, the global average is 26 days.

“Canada’s 13th place ranking reflects its strong economy and favourable exchange rate,” Jovan Babovic, cofounder and creative director of Tenscope, told iPhone in Canada. “While Canadians work one extra day compared to Americans, they still maintain excellent iPhone affordability globally. The minimal price premium shows how currency stability and economic strength keep premium technology accessible to Canadian consumers.”

Tenscope said the rankings were based on Apple’s official pricing, International Labour Organization wage data for 33 countries, and Bureau of Labor Statistics data for U.S. states. The affordability measure is calculated by converting average wages into the number of working hours—presented globally as eight-hour days and in the U.S. as hours worked.

Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro now starts at $1,599 in Canada with 256GB of storage. Unlike the regular iPhone 17, which kept its 128GB price while doubling storage to 256GB, Apple dropped the 128GB option for the Pro model and raised the entry price. The iPhone 17 series and iPhone Air are set to launch this Friday, September 19.

Interesting that the country where these iphones are put together is nowhere to be found on this list – wonder why.
