Study Reveals ChatGPT Creates Value For Jobs, Daily Tasks

OpenAI has released new findings on how people are using ChatGPT, showing that the tool is no longer limited to early adopters but is becoming a daily assistant for millions around the world.

The study, conducted with the help of Harvard economist David Deming, analyzed over a million conversations to understand how usage has shifted since launch. The results reveal that ChatGPT is being used more for work, decision making, and everyday guidance than ever before.

Findings show that the gender gap in usage has narrowed significantly. Women now make up a larger portion of users, a shift from the early days when men represented the majority. Adoption has also grown sharply in low and middle income countries, with users in these regions embracing ChatGPT at more than four times the rate of people in the highest income nations.

The research also breaks down how people interact with ChatGPT. Most conversations fall into three categories that OpenAI calls Asking, Doing, and Expressing.

Asking is the largest share, with nearly half of users seeking information or advice. Doing represents about 40% and includes tasks such as writing, coding, planning or organizing work. Expressing accounts for just over 10% and covers creative exploration or personal reflection.

One of the most notable findings is that almost a third of ChatGPT use is tied directly to work. People are using the tool to draft emails, review documents, improve writing, and speed up everyday decisions. The remaining share takes place in non work settings, such as personal messaging, learning, or creative hobbies.

The study also emphasizes that ChatGPT’s biggest contribution may be in decision support. In jobs where knowledge and judgment matter, users reported that the tool improved both speed and confidence.

OpenAI points out that all of the study’s findings were based on aggregated and automated analysis, not human review of conversations.

Haha that's basically asking ChatGPT if it itself is useful.
