Sonos Makes It Easier to Pick Speakers Before You Hit Play
Sonos has released new updates for its iOS and Android apps, along with a firmware update for its speakers.
The rollout is phased and will take up to two weeks to reach all users, though iOS users can download the update directly from the App Store if it hasn’t appeared automatically. We’re not seeing this yet—let us know if you’re seeing the revamped play button.
The app updates (version 80.28.32 on iOS and 80.28.36 on Android) include a redesigned Play button that makes it easier to see where playback will start and to switch rooms without leaving the page. Now, we get back the the option to choose speakers, then click play.
Other changes include minor interface tweaks, Sonos Radio being pre-pinned for new households, improvements to TalkBack accessibility on the Home Edit screen, and a fix for issues with unbonded Subs.
Support for Android 8 and 9 is also being phased out, with users needing to upgrade to Android 10 or later to keep receiving updates.
Alongside the app updates, Sonos has pushed new firmware (version 91.0-68261) for its speakers. The update adds integration between Sonos Voice Control and Philips Hue (announced previously), allowing users to control Hue lights and plugs directly from a Sonos voice-enabled speaker.
Commands will support turning lights on and off, dimming, changing colours, and activating scenes. The feature requires a Sonos speaker with voice control, a Philips Hue Bridge, and linked accounts, and will be available in US English and French.
