How to Turn Off Safari Top Bar Colours in macOS Tahoe: It’s So Annoying

Have you upgraded your Mac to macOS Tahoe yet? If you have, then you probably have experienced one of my most hated features that has been turned on by default: show colour in tab bar.

Not sure what Apple’s Safari team was thinking, but this terrible feature will match your tabs and favourites to the same colour on certain websites. When this happens it basically turns your bookmarks and tabs useless as the colours match and things get confusing. Apple, why?

Here’s an example:

Safari tab colors spacex.

How to turn off this Safari tab bar colour matching feature? It’s easy and it will feel so good once it’s done.

With Safari open, head to Safari in the upper menu, then to Settings > Tabs > Appearance > Untick ‘Show color in tab bar’. Here’s a screenshot of where it is:

Safari color tab bar.

I’m not sure why anyone at Apple thought this was a good idea by default. While we’re at it, tabs are hard to distinguish and can be easily confused for any bookmark favourites above them.

While I’m in a grumpy old man (yelling at the cloud) state, Safari in iOS 26 is also annoying as it now takes an extra tap to see all your tabs, unlike Safari in macOS Tahoe. That’s because Apple enables a new Compact view now by default. You can turn this off too by going to Settings > Apps > Safari > scroll down to Tabs > select Bottom. Totally easy to find and turn this off, Apple.

What macOS Tahoe feature is driving you bananas right now?

I didn't notice..lol. However, I found it super helpful that authorization codes via text messages can now be automatically filled in on Chrome.

I've read this 3 times and I still have no idea what that check box does or what the complaint is…

I don't know if it's just me, but my app launcher keeps bouncing incessantly with each updated app from the app store, but I can't seem to as-cleanly remove the apps that are causing it to spaz out like this… I used to be able to go in there, and hold the mouse button down, and click the nice 'x' to delete it, similar to iOS… now, it appears as though I have to do it all through the Finder (Applications folder), but the removed apps don't disappear from the app launcher until I log out or reboot…. I haven't tested how this works with multiple users, but it's definitely a step backwards imo. I don't usually like to downgrade, but I just might see if I can skip this version altogether.

I disabled that feature almost immediately too, when I found out about it. I wish they also had a checkbox to bring back the old style of tabs. The new rounded look makes it confusing to see which is the current tab.
