CRTC Finally Wants to Hear From You on Cell and Internet Outages

The CRTC is asking Canadians—and service providers themselves—to take part in a new survey on how to make internet and cellphone networks more reliable. The consultation runs until December 3, 2025.

The public is being asked to share their experiences with outages, including what could have prevented them and how providers responded. Service providers are also being asked what could make their networks more resilient and how companies could support each other during emergencies to keep services running.

The survey covers topics such as:

  • Whether providers should be required to inform customers about emergency preparedness.
  • How telecoms can improve 9-1-1 access and public alerting during power outages or natural disasters.
  • What information Canadians need most in an emergency.
  • How the CRTC can work with rural, remote, and Indigenous communities on reliability.
  • What enforcement tools should be used to make sure providers follow through.

The regulator says it is considering new standards for backup power, stronger infrastructure, emergency planning, and quicker responses when things go wrong.

Another day and more busy work it seems from the CRTC. Let’s see what this survey will even accomplish, if anything. Let us know if you’re going to fill it out or not.

Rural? How about urban?! I cannot go more than a couple of months without my Rogers Ignite service having a neighbourhood-wide outage or packet loss so high you can't even get above 10 Mb/s on a speed test (also neighbourhood-wide).

This was after I spent eight months fighting them before they finally accepted their headend was extremely oversubscribed (and they increased capacity).
