Apple Watch Hypertension Warnings Approved in Canada

Apple watch hypertension.

Health Canada has officially approved Apple’s Hypertension Notifications feature for the Apple Watch, adding Canada to the growing list of countries where the health tool can launch.

The licence was granted on September 25, 2025, under Licence No. 114026, as spotted by customers following the Health Canada medical devices listing page. The feature works by analyzing heart data collected through the Apple Watch’s optical sensor. Over a 30-day period, it looks for patterns suggesting chronic high blood pressure (hypertension) and notifies the wearer if it detects concerns.

Apple notes the tool is not meant to diagnose or treat hypertension, but rather to prompt users to follow up with their doctor. Hypertension, or ongoing high blood pressure, can damage the heart, blood vessels, and other organs if left unchecked.

With this approval, Apple Watch owners in Canada may soon be able to turn on the feature through the Health app on their iPhone, once a software update is pushed by Apple.

Apple’s website currently lists 77 regions where the feature is available, but Canada isn’t on that list yet. That will likely change soon now that Health Canada has cleared it, following a similar path to the Sleep Apnea notification, which was quickly approved in late September last year.

Canadians are used to waiting forever for the latest features. For example, nations such as Afghanistan, Bhutan and Belize were approved for Hypertension Notifications, while Health Canada dragged its feet (again). The AirPods Pro 2 and 3 Hearing Aid feature has yet to debut in Canada (although some are saying it’s working for them).

To use the Hypertension Notifications feature, you will need an Apple Watch Series 9 or Ultra 2 (or newer), an iPhone 11 or later, and the latest software updates. Users must be 22 or older, not pregnant, and have no prior hypertension diagnosis.

If you get a notification, it means your Apple Watch noticed patterns of possible high blood pressure over the last 30 days. Apple recommends logging your blood pressure with a cuff and talking to your doctor.

How to Turn On Hypertension Notifications on Apple Watch (When it Launches in Canada)

  • Make sure your Apple Watch is Series 9 or Ultra 2 (or newer) and updated to the latest watchOS.
  • Your iPhone must be iPhone 11 or newer, running the latest iOS.
  • On your iPhone, open the Health app.
  • Tap your profile icon (top right).
  • Go to Health Checklist → Hypertension Notifications.
  • Confirm your age (22+) and that you’ve never been diagnosed with hypertension.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions, then tap Done.

Are you looking forward to getting the Hypertension Notifications feature in Canada?
