Alexa+ Now in External Beta Testing in Canada

Amazon’s Alexa+ has officially entered a limited, closed beta phase in Canada, ahead of a wider availability Early Access launch in the country. Canada is planned as the first international market to begin gaining access to the AI-powered assistant following its introduction in the US.

iPhone in Canada can confirm that Alexa+ beta testing is being made available by invitation only to a number of Canadian customers. Select customers have been engaged to test the localized experience and provide feedback on it, including across different configurations, smart home set-ups, in different environments and use cases, so the company can continue to build and invent new capabilities for Alexa customers. These users are the first to be able to test these AI-powered innovations within the Canadian market. Amazon plans to roll out Alexa+ Early Access to Canada and more countries in the coming months.

According to the company, one of the challenges to bringing Alexa+ to Canada is localization. Leveraging AI requires the LLMs to be trained in English, which Alexa+ has accomplished in the US. However, it’s much more complex in non-English languages like the French Canadian language.

Adding to this, Alexa+ has to be able to recognize and deliver information curated for Canadians. So, the weather has to be delivered in Celsius. Specific words like “colour” have to be spelled and dictated in a way that reflects English in Canada.

While it may not seem like there’s a massive difference in language between the US and Canada, one of the struggles in rolling out Alexa+ in other markets has been ensuring cultural nuances are taken into account. The ways Canadians speak, the little quirks in our dialogue or slang, all have to be taken into account to converse with Alexa+ without any friction.

Alexa+ is designed to be the improved version of the base Alexa assistant. Leverage AI features and contextual conversations, Alexa+ can read your personalized schedule, interact with smart devices and entertainment apps. Doing all of this in tandem, Alexa+ is supposed to provide a personal experience within the Amazon ecosystem.

To enter Canada, the AI assistant has to be integrated across 1000s of different services and APIs. This includes compatibility with local partners. Many existing Alexa+ partners in the US simply aren’t available in Canada. This requires Alexa+ to be fine-tuned to support Canada-specific services or branches of global partners.

Amazon’s newly announced devices, including the new Echo series, are built from the ground up to support all new Alexa+ experiences. These include features like having Alexa+ flag when a regular habit, such as taking out the trash, has been missed. Alexa+ can also automate smart home actions when you’re cooking dinner or sitting down to watch a movie. Once launched, Alexa+ will adapt to homes across Canada and provide personalized experiences.

Thankfully, it appears as though Amazon is making great strides to address all of this to bring Alexa+ to Canada. Addressing localization, cultural context, and local partners, the AI assistant will be a better fit to interact with Canadians when the company is ready for a wider, Early Access launch in the country.
