iPhone 17 Pro Max Hits New Benchmarks After DIY Cooling Mod
A Reddit user’s bold modification to an iPhone 17 Pro Max has sparked attention after photos surfaced showing multiple M.2 SSD coolers mounted to the device’s back.

According to testing reports, that setup enabled nearly 90% stability in a demanding 3DMark stress test, suggesting impressive gains in sustained performance under heavy load.
As seen above, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is rigged with desktop-style heatsinks, copper heat pipes, and small fans typically designed for SSDs. The mod aims to overcome the thermal limitations of passive cooling in smartphones.
In standard form, the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max models already come with a vapor chamber cooling system built by Apple, a feature introduced to help improve thermal performance. Still, this Reddit experiment rivaled or exceeded what many expected passive cooling could achieve, at least in a constrained benchmark setting.
The benchmark numbers are revealing. With the custom cooling attached, the device showed as much as 21% improvement in peak scores compared to its default state under the same test. That suggests that pulling heat away more aggressively than Apple’s default solution may yield extra thermal headroom and reduce performance drops over extended periods.
Enthusiasts on Reddit debated technical merits and limitations. One commenter noted that while the vapor chamber helps spread heat, its effectiveness depends on how well the heat can exit the device through its frame and surface. Others raised concerns about whether typical phone cases might block that dissipation or whether the mod’s weight and bulk would outweigh its benefit.

Beyond bragging rights, this mod offers a glimpse into how far cooling performance might be pushed in handheld devices. It shows that performance stability is still limited not just by chip design but by how well generated heat is carried away.
