Apple Stores Update MagSafe Stands to Prevent iPhone 17 Pro Scratches

Apple has quietly updated the MagSafe charging stands in its retail outlets by adding a soft silicone ring to the contact area to stop faint marks appearing on iPhone 17  Pro display units.

Late on launch day, visitors and media noted that some iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max units exhibited what appeared to be scratches or smudges around the MagSafe area. Apple later clarified that those marks were not permanent damage.

The company concluded they were caused by material transfer from worn MagSafe stands rather than actual scratching. In some cases the residue can be cleaned off.

In public statements, Apple explained that the retail stands used for display units get heavy usage, which accelerates wear on the charger surfaces. When users repeatedly place and remove demo phones, small particles from aging components may transfer to the phone’s glass back. This effect is more prominent on darker color finishes, where it is easier to see residue.

To address this, Apple has started fitting a silicone buffer ring around the MagSafe contact area in stores. The buffer acts as a protective layer to stop direct rubbing between the phone’s back and the metal surface of the stand. Observers have already spotted the modified stands in at least some Apple retail locations.

In parallel, Apple has directed its retail teams to replace heavily worn MagSafe pads and to adopt more rigorous cleaning protocols. Some reports indicate the company is using mild salt-based cleaning solutions for demo units to help lift off transferred residues without damaging the coatings.

Aside from the MagSafe mark issue, durability concerns have surfaced elsewhere with the iPhone 17 Pro models. In durability testing, some reviewers flagged the edges of the camera plateau as prone to light scratching over time, noting the lack of chamfer or smoothing at those edges.

Apple responded by stating that the edges are anodized similarly to aluminum surfaces on its other devices and that small abrasions over long use are expected.
