Netflix Bringing Boggle and Other Games to its Core TV Service

Netflix is expanding its video game prospects by bringing a handful of games to its core TV streaming service. A collection of party games, including Boggle PartyPictionary: Game NightTetris Time Warp and Lego Party, are being made available.

Co-Chief Executive Officer Greg Peters announced the news this week during the Bloomberg Screentime conference in Los Angeles. It’s reported that, unlike its gaming initiatives on mobile devices, players interacting with the new library of games can launch them on their TVs. Once available, players can interact with them by using their smartphone as controllers while the action all happens on the TV.

Across Boggle PartyPictionary: Game NightTetris Time Warp and Lego Party, the majority of the titles will be available to play for free. The exception is Lego Party, which will be available for $40 USD (around $55 CAD).

To play the games, users must have a compatible smart TV or streaming stick from Roku, Amazon Fire TV, etc. Once a game is selected, a QR code will appear on the screen where all players can scan it with their smartphones.

Netflix has been building its business in games since 2021. However, up until this point, all of its core gaming plans revolved around mobile games within the Netflix app on iOS and Android. Titles under Netflix Games include Tomb Raider Reloaded, Squid Game: Unleashed, and World of Peppa Pig. The company has also published many partnering games, including Grand Theft Auto III – Definitive Edition and Intro to the Breach. Netflix has also made some major business moves to acquire studios like Next Games and Boss Fight Entertainment.

Alain Tascan, the head of Netflix’s gaming business, also went on to analyze how other film and TV companies have attempted to enter the space of gaming within streaming services. “They took a short-term approach,” Tascan said.

The feature will be launching in Canada, the US, the United Kingdom, Spain, Mexico, France, Italy, Poland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Belgium, Switzerland, Austria, Ireland, Finland, Germany, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.
