OpenAI’s Sora Hits 1 Million Downloads in Under 5 Days, Faster Than ChatGPT

OpenAI’s new video-generation app Sora has taken off in record time, surpassing 1 million downloads in less than five days, according to Bill Peebles, head of Sora at OpenAI.
Peebles said on Wednesday that the milestone came “even faster than ChatGPT did (despite the invite flow and only targeting North America)” and added that the team is “working hard to keep up with surging growth,” promising more features and adjustments to over-moderation soon.
YouTuber and ‘boxer’ Jake Paul also revealed he’s been advising the Sora team this year and is an OpenAI investor. “I agreed to become the first celebrity [Name, Image, and Likeness] cameo user and from there things went crazy,” he said on X, noting that his AI cameo videos have generated over 1 billion views in six days.
Paul congratulated the company, saying “Congrats to the Sora team on a great product and making the internet fun again.”
Despite the popularity, some have criticized the app for using copyright material in its videos.
The Sora app is currently ranked number 1 in the App Store under the Photo and Video category in Canada. It’s still invite-only so you need to get a code from someone to get started. Have you tried the new Sora yet?
