Airbnb Postpones ChatGPT Integration Citing Readiness Issues

In a recent interview, Airbnb CEO Brian Chesky revealed the company has opted not to integrate its travel app with ChatGPT at this time, citing concerns over the readiness of the integration platform, Bloomberg is reporting.

Chesky said Airbnb is closely watching the evolving landscape of app integrations inside ChatGPT but concluded that additional development is required before the company can commit to that path.

He explained that while many peers have already tied their services into ChatGPT’s ecosystem, Airbnb views the current state of integration tools as less than ideal for its verified-community model. He pointed out that Airbnb’s platform relies heavily on trust, verified users and a broad ecosystem of hosts and guests, meaning any integration must be nearly self-contained and robust.

The company’s cautious stance stands in contrast to other travel-industry players that have embraced ChatGPT’s app integration features. For example, certain online travel-booking platforms have already released ChatGPT-linked functionality.

At the same time, Chesky indicated that integration may still happen in the future if and when ChatGPT’s ecosystem reaches a level of maturity consistent with Airbnb’s standards. He said the company will continue to monitor the development of these tools and reassess when they align with Airbnb’s operational and security needs.

Behind the scenes, Airbnb is navigating broader shifts in how digital services and artificial intelligence blend into travel and lifestyle apps. The company has recently expanded its focus beyond homes into services, experiences and social connectivity, under Chesky’s vision of creating a platform that supports not just stays but lifestyles.

Chesky also addressed the broader question of AI chatbot capabilities and their fit for travel and service-driven ecosystems. He has previously stated that while chatbots like ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity are promising, they are not yet ready to replace core search engines or function fully in the role of booking and service management platforms.

Because Airbnb remains an app that handles millions of transactions, reviews and safety checks, Chesky seems to be placing reliability and control ahead of novelty in the near term.
