Samsung’s Galaxy XR Takes on Apple Vision Pro for Half the Cost

Samsung has introduced the Galaxy XR, a mixed-reality headset built on the new Android XR platform co-developed with Google and Qualcomm. The device is the first in a planned lineup of AI-native products designed to merge virtual and real-world experiences.
The Galaxy XR is the debut product for Android XR, a platform made to power next-generation headsets and future AI glasses. Samsung says the goal is to make extended reality (XR) part of everyday life, combining AI, voice, vision, and gestures for navigation, gaming, and productivity.

The headset uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chip, with a 4K Micro-OLED display, 16 GB of memory, and 256 GB of storage. It supports eye, head, and hand tracking, along with iris recognition for secure logins. The separate battery helps reduce weight, bringing the headset to about 545 grams for comfort during longer sessions.
Built with Gemini AI integrated at the system level, Galaxy XR can respond to the user’s surroundings through natural voice and gesture interactions. Samsung says it’s meant to feel more like an “AI companion” than a tool, designed to understand context and react in real time.
The headset supports popular Android apps optimized for XR, including Google Maps, YouTube, and Google Photos. Users can explore 3D maps, watch videos with added depth, or use “Circle to Search” to identify objects in their physical environment.

For entertainment, the Galaxy XR provides a 4K viewing experience, immersive sports streaming, and spatial audio. Samsung also highlights creative tools like Adobe’s Project Pulsar for editing 3D videos and photos.
Samsung is also targeting business use, partnering with Samsung Heavy Industries for virtual shipbuilding training and working with Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Spaces platform to support enterprise XR software.

As part of its broader roadmap, Samsung plans to release AI-powered glasses in collaboration with Google, Warby Parker, and Gentle Monster—blending smart tech with wearable fashion.
The Galaxy XR is available now in the U.S. through Samsung.com and Samsung Experience Stores for $1,799.99 US (about $2,520 CAD). Optional accessories include a travel case and controller, each priced at $249.99 US.
As for Canada? The Galaxy XR is not available in Canada right now as it’s U.S. only at launch.
Early buyers before the end of 2025 get the Explorer Pack, which includes a year of Google AI Pro, YouTube Premium, Google Play Pass, and exclusive XR content worth over $1,000 US.
