Samsung’s First XR Headset Could Arrive as Early as October, According to Report

Samsung is expected to launch its ‘Project Moohan’ XR headset as early as next month. According to a new report, the company is looking to unveil its first XR headset on October 21st.

According to ETNews‘ sources, the company will unveil Project Moohan after first discussing its plan to release a headset in partnership with Google late last year. The report claims that Samsung’s original plan was to unveil the device this month. However, due to internal marketing adjustments, the reveal and spec announcement was delayed until October.

At launch, sales for Project Moohan are expected to be coordinated through Samsung’s official website. It’s claimed that shipments could be around 100,000 units, marking a softer launch for a Samsung product. However, given the niche market that Apple’s Vision Pro and Meta Quest headsets already exist in, the tepid rollout makes sense.

Project Moohan is being built on the new Android XR platform, which was designed in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. The headset is said to support “state-of-the-art displays” with passthrough capabilities and natural multi-modal input. It’ll be able to offer a spatial design for apps like Google Maps, YouTube and offer Gemini features.

It’s reported that Project Moohan will leverage micro OLED displays made by Samsung Display and is targeting a resolution of 3,800ppi. If true, this would overachieve the resolution of Vision Pro, which supports 3,391ppi. The headset is also believed to utilize Qualcomm’s Snapdragon XR2+ 2nd generation and offer 16GB of RAM.

Samsung’s headset is expected to be priced at around 2 million won (around $1,990 CAD). Prescription lenses will also be made available and sold separately, much like the optical lenses produced by ZEISS for Vision Pro.

It’s still unknown if Samsung will opt for a global launch right out of the gate or if it will roll out Project Moohan in waves, similar to Apple and its Vision Pro release.
