Amazon Launches First Rivian Electric Delivery Vans in Canada

Amazon has begun using its first electric delivery vans from Rivian in Canada, with 50 vehicles now operating in the Greater Vancouver area. The rollout marks a major step in Amazon’s plan to cut emissions across its delivery fleet and reach net-zero carbon by 2040.
“Amazon has always been committed to offering the fastest delivery speeds for our customers, and it’s tremendously exciting to now launch our first major initiative targeting the decarbonization of our local delivery fleet,” said Eva Lorenz, Vice President and Country Manager, Amazon Canada, in a statement to iPhone in Canada on Thursday. “We know that investing in solutions that reduce our impact on the environment also has benefits for our customers, employees and business partners.”

The new electric vans are based out of Amazon’s Delta, B.C. delivery station (also known as DYV1) and are being used by two local Delivery Service Partners. Amazon says the custom Rivian vans are designed to make deliveries safer and more efficient, with features like 360-degree visibility, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and integrated routing and navigation tools.
The vehicles also include ventilated seats, powered doors, and ergonomic cabins to make drivers’ work more comfortable.

“We’re thrilled to launch Amazon’s first custom electric delivery vans in Canada. As we advance our local investments and innovations, this initiative reflects Amazon’s broader mission to build a transportation network that works for our customers, our communities, and our planet,” said Jasmin Begagic, Director of AMZL Canada, in a statement.
Back in summer 2022, Amazon first started rolling out Rivian electric vans in the U.S., and currently has over 25,000 across the country.
Amazon first partnered with Rivian in 2019 to build a global electric fleet, aiming to deploy 100,000 vans by 2030. At the time, Amazon invested $700 million US in an early funding round into California-based Rivian. So far, more than 35,000 electric vehicles have already delivered over 1.5 billion packages worldwide.
