Spotify’s Lossless Audio Is Now Live on Sonos Speakers
Spotify’s long-awaited lossless audio feature has officially arrived on Sonos speakers.
Sonos confirmed the rollout today, saying users can now stream higher-quality audio from Spotify on compatible devices.
To enable lossless playback, Premium members first need to turn on the feature in the Spotify app. After that, simply connect to a Sonos speaker and adjust the audio quality setting to activate lossless streaming.
According to Sonos, the setting is system-wide, meaning once you’ve enabled it on one speaker, it automatically applies to all others on your network.
Lossless audio keeps every bit of data from the original recording, so you’re hearing exactly what was captured in the studio without compression. Standard or “lossy” formats like MP3 or AAC shrink file sizes by removing subtle details, which makes them smaller and faster to stream but slightly lower in quality.
Apple Music normally streams in 256 kbps AAC for high-quality, compressed playback. When Lossless Audio is enabled, it switches to ALAC format, offering CD-quality or hi-res sound up to 24-bit/192 kHz.
You can enable lossless in Spotify by going to your profile icon, then tapping Settings and privacy, then Media quality and then picking Lossless:
Spotify first announced plans to bring lossless audio to Premium subscribers back in September, marking a long-awaited upgrade for music fans who’ve been waiting years for higher-quality streaming.
