Spotify Reportedly Testing Group Chat Feature After Adding DMs

Spotify is reported to be testing a group chat feature within the app. Weeks after incorporating its DM feature, the music streaming service may soon let users share music and podcasts in groups of three or more.

On X (formerly Twitter), Jan Manchun Wong shared screen grabs of Spotify’s group chat feature. At a brief look, group chats operate similarly to the company’s DM feature. By connecting with other users, Spotify looks to support the ability to add more than one friend to a chat. Here, friends can send texts, emojis, songs, podcasts, etc.

Earlier this summer, Spotify introduced DMs to its app. Users above the age of 16 could engage in one-on-one conversations with each other to share content like a song, podcast, or audiobook. By hitting the ‘Share’ icon, songs or other content can be shared with friends. Users have to accept a message request for the chat to begin.

With the DM feature available, Spotify updated its policies against illegal and harmful content within its Terms of Use and Platform Rules. Messages that infringe on its policies can be reported, and other users can be blocked if need be.

As of the time of writing, the group chat function seems to be in a limited testing phase and isn’t accessible to everyone. There’s no word on when or if a wide release may take place. Spotify hasn’t made any official announcement regarding the feature.

Spotify when it was just a platform for listening to music. Even though it was not lossless at the time, it was much better than. Now that it's lossless I'm still not going to use it because it has audiobooks. It has podcasts and now it has DMS and chat platforms. Possibly it's way too much for a platform that used to be very good and doing one thing.
