How to Understand Your iPhone’s Battery Usage [VIDEO]

Apple Support has shared a new video explaining how iPhone users can better understand their battery usage, learn what’s using the most power, and optimize performance to get even more battery life out of their devices.

The latest iPhone models may have the largest batteries ever in an iPhone, but that doesn’t mean you can’t squeeze out even more battery life with a few quick settings checks.

According to Apple, your iPhone’s battery performance can fluctuate for a few days after updating to a new version of iOS or setting up a new device, as background processes continue to complete. You can check whether this is happening by heading to Settings > Battery — if iOS is still finishing background tasks, you’ll see a banner in the Insights section.

Apple also recommends using Wi-Fi whenever possible, since it typically consumes less power than cellular data.

Under Settings > Battery, users can see a detailed breakdown of their battery activity. You can tap “View All Battery Usage” to see how much charge was used each day, your hourly charge levels, and how much time you were actively on your screen. You can also scroll down to view usage by app — and even see how much time each app spent on screen over the past week.

Depending on your configuration, iOS might also provide optimization suggestions to help improve overall battery life.

In the same Battery settings menu, you’ll also find information about your battery’s current health. On supported iPhone models, you can turn on Adaptive Power, which automatically adjusts performance to extend battery life, and activates Low Power Mode once your charge drops below 20 percent. You can also enable notifications to stay informed when Adaptive Power is active.

Apple’s new video breaks down each of these tips visually, making it easier to follow along and understand what’s happening behind the scenes with your iPhone battery.
